TEACHING & LEADERSHIP
PROFESSIONAL CLASS
Helen Calcutt teaches professional class across the U.K. and internationally.
Her practice moves between precision and play, centering of grounding technique within breath-led, expansive movement and music. She also delivers core elements of cross-disciplinary practice, including voice and text.
Helen also brings over 15 years’ experience as a Cuban Salsa dancer and teacher, specialising in the interplay of lead-and-follow technique, dynamic solo footwork, and body isolations and styling.
Helen facilitates professional engagement for Brum Pro Class, Drift Pro Dance, Tripspace (London) MAC Birmingham, the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire of Acting, The Playgroud (Rambert), NYCD (Northern School of Contemporary Dance), The Place (London), Candela Fina, and stand-alone workshops and/or masterclasses for many Universities across the region including the University of Bolton, University of Wolverhampton, Birmingham University, University Centre Leeds, and others.
COMMUNITY
Helen’s community practice is rooted in her belief in dance as a vital route to expression and belonging, fostering spaces of nourishment, safety and trust.
Working with people aged 3–90 across an expansive and rich variety of settings, her approach emphasises deep connection making – to the body, to others, and to lived experience.
She has led community experiences for MAC Birmingham, FABRIC Dance, Birmingham Opera Company, Midlands Actors Theatre, Hounslow Action for Youth, Autin Dance Theatre, Birmingham Hippodrome and the Southbank Centre, alongside large-scale participation projects for the 2026 European Athletics Championships celebrations, BIDF Festival, and the Birmingham Weekender Festival.
